| Abstract | This article is designed to provide an overview on the usage of remote sensing and GIS to map urban sprawl upon basis of medium-resolution satellite images. The introductory section exposes the very beginnings of remote sensing research in Brazil, with the foundation of the National Institute for Space Research - INPE. The second section aims at describing the methods and approaches employed to map urban sprawl in main metropolitan regions and highly urbanised areas of São Paulo State, southeast of Brazil, with the aid of TM - Landsat 5 images and GIS. Finally, the third section is dedicated to analyse the trade-off between orbital and air-borne remote sensing for urban applications as well as to reveal the demands for the coming generation of urban remote sensing achievements. |
